Facts checked for the 2026–2027 season against the operators' own pages (Santa Claus Village, Snowman World, SantaPark, VR, Finavia). Hours and prices change by season: the booking page has the final word.
A husky ride is the activity most families book first in Santa Claus Village, and the one with the widest price range: a quarter of an hour behind a team on the village trail costs less than a SantaPark ticket, while a self-drive tour at a real kennel is a half-day with a transfer, a briefing and a hundred barking dogs. This page sorts the offers for winter 2026–2027 by place, length and age, with the operators' own hours and the details that matter once you stand on the runners: who drives, how fast, what to wear and how the dogs are kept.

Where the husky rides start
| Place | Distance from the square | Season and hours | Price | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Santa's Husky Rides (Bearhill Husky) in the village | on site, Joulumaantie | 30 Nov – 4 Apr, 10:00 – 16:00 | about 63 € per person, 30 min with a 2 km ride; rated 4.7 by 1,500 travellers | guide drives, two adults or a parent and two children sit in the sled |
| Arctic Circle Husky Park | 500 m, next to the reindeer yard | Dec – Feb, 9:00 – 16:00 | kennel visit from about 30 €; short rides 50–80 € | walk between the pens, meet the dogs, short sled loops |
| Bearhill Husky main kennel, Sinettä road | 35 km, transfer included | Dec – early Apr, two or three departures a day | 100–190 € depending on length | self-drive: two per sled, swap halfway |
| Other kennels around Rovaniemi (Lapland Safaris, Safartica, Wild Nordic partners) | 15–40 km, hotel pick-up | Dec – Mar | 120–250 € for 1–2 hours on the trail | self-drive or guide-driven, often with lunch by the fire |
| Husky and aurora by night | transfer from the village | Dec – Mar, 19:00 – 22:00 | 150–220 € | a short night run and a campfire; aurora if the sky allows |
The village ride is the quick, cheap and photogenic version: the sled follows a lit loop through the forest behind Snowman World, the musher stands on the runners and you sit under a reindeer hide. It sells by time slot, and between Christmas and New Year the afternoon slots are gone by lunchtime. The self-drive tours are a different product: a two-person sled, one driving and one sitting, 5 to 15 kilometres on forest trails and frozen lakes, with the guide's team setting the pace in front.

Driving a sled yourself
No experience is needed, but the briefing is not a formality. The dogs will run the moment the snow anchor is lifted, so the driver keeps one foot on the brake mat until the guide waves, leans into the curves and never lets go of the handlebar; a tipped sled with no driver is the one thing every kennel wants to avoid. Alaskan huskies run at 15–25 km/h and would keep going for hours, which is why tours stop to let the dogs cool down and the passengers swap places. Most operators ask drivers to be at least 15 and accompanied, 18 to drive alone; children from about 4 ride in the sled with an adult, babies under 2 are usually not taken on the trail at all. Weight limits of around 150–180 kg per sled are standard.

What a kennel visit looks like
A working kennel near Rovaniemi keeps 100 to 300 dogs in pens and small houses, each with a name on the roof, and the noise when the teams are being harnessed is part of the show. Guides explain the breeding, the diet (fish, meat and fat in winter), the summer life and why the dogs are happiest when they run. You can usually walk between the pens, pet the dogs that are not working and meet the puppies; the Arctic Circle Husky Park in the village is the easy version of this for anyone who does not want a transfer. Ask about the kennel's animal-welfare practice: the Finnish operators listed here let visitors see the dogs rest, retire them into pet homes and run in rotation.
Husky, reindeer or snowmobile?
| Ride | Speed | Noise | Who it suits | Price for 1–2 hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Husky sled | 15–25 km/h | barking at the start, then silence | anyone from 4 up; the most exciting of the three | 60 € (village loop) to 190 € |
| Reindeer sleigh | 5–10 km/h, walking pace | quiet | small children, grandparents, photographers | 20–100 € |
| Snowmobile | up to 60 km/h on trails | engine | adults with a driving licence; kids in a sleigh | 100–170 € |
If the budget allows one long ride, families with children under ten usually get more from the reindeer, teenagers and couples from the self-drive husky tour. The village loop is the compromise that costs little and takes half an hour, so it fits between meeting Santa and Snowman World.
What to wear
Sitting in a sled at −20 °C with the wind of the run is colder than walking around the square. The kennel tours include thermal overalls, boots, mittens and a balaclava, and lend them in the yard; the village loop does not, so wear a wool base layer, insulated trousers, a windproof jacket, a hat that covers the ears and mittens rather than gloves. Sunglasses in March, hand warmers in December, and the phone in an inside pocket: batteries die quickly in the sled. Rental sets of winter clothing cost about 46 € a day in Rovaniemi and are delivered to the hotels.
Booking and timing
Book the village loop a few days ahead in December and on the day in other months; the self-drive tours need a booking because the number of sleds is fixed. GetYourGuide lists the village rides and the kennel tours with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which lets you move the slot if a storm closes the trails. Noon and early afternoon have the most light for photos between December and January; in February and March the light lasts until 17:00 and the trails are faster. Combine a morning kennel tour with the aurora hunt in the evening, not with a snowmobile safari: both tire you out and both lend you the same overall.

The village loop sells by time slot and the kennel tours have a fixed number of sleds; free cancellation lets you move the day if the weather turns.
