The snowmobile is the fastest way out of Santa Claus Village and into the empty forest: within ten minutes of the square the trail drops onto the frozen Ounasjoki or into the woods towards Vikajärvi, and the only sound is the engine. Safaris leave from the Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park in the village and from the operators' bases in Rovaniemi, last two to six hours and need a driving licence. Here is what the winter 2026–2027 season offers, what the rules are, how the insurance works and how to take children along.

Two people per snowmobile is the standard: driver and passenger swap halfway, and a single rider pays a supplement. The guide drives in front and sets the pace for the whole group, which is why a safari with first-timers feels slower than the brochure photo suggests.

Licence, age and the rules on the trail

Finnish law allows anyone with a valid driving licence, a moped licence included, to drive a snowmobile on the marked trails; the operators go further and require a car licence and 18 years for the driver, with the licence shown at the briefing. Passengers can be any age that fits a helmet, and younger children ride in the sleigh behind the guide. The speed limit is 60 km/h on trails and 80 km/h on frozen lakes, helmets are compulsory, alcohol before or during the ride is out, and leaving the marked trail is both forbidden and the main way to get stuck. Snowmobiles are driven on the right and overtaking the guide is not allowed; the group stops at every road crossing.

Insurance and the excess

Every safari price includes third-party insurance and a damage excess, the Finnish «omavastuu», that the driver pays if the snowmobile is damaged: typically 900–1,500 € per vehicle. Most operators sell an excess reduction for 15–30 € that brings it down to a few hundred euros, which is worth taking for a first ride. Travel insurance rarely covers the excess, so read the booking page before signing the waiver at the briefing.

Taking children

Snowmobile safaris are more child-friendly than they look. The Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park in the village runs a fenced track with mini-snowmobiles for children from about four to twelve years, a few minutes for a small fee, and a wider track for teenagers with a parent. On the real safaris children sit in a covered, heated sleigh pulled by the guide's snowmobile, wrapped in blankets; the family safari is designed around that and keeps the distance short. Children big enough to sit behind an adult on the snowmobile ride as passengers from about 140 cm, at the operator's discretion.

Clothing and the cold

The wind at 50 km/h takes −15 °C down to −30 °C on the skin. The thermal overall, boots, balaclava, mittens and helmet are included in every safari and handed out at the base; wear a wool base layer and a fleece under them, no cotton, no jeans, and bring your own thin gloves for the camera and ski goggles if you have them. The heated handlebars help, hand warmers in the mittens help more. Glasses fog up under the visor; contact lenses are easier.

Snowmobile, husky or reindeer?

The snowmobile covers the most ground and is the only one of the three that feels like an expedition; it is also the only one that needs a licence and makes noise. Couples and groups of friends usually pick it, families with small children do better with the reindeer sleigh and a mini-snowmobile lap, and anyone who wants the animal experience chooses the husky tour. Do not book a snowmobile safari and a husky tour on the same day: both lend you the same overall, both take half a day, and the second one is always the one you sleep through.

Booking

Safaris have a fixed number of snowmobiles and sell out in the Christmas weeks, so book from home; GetYourGuide lists the village operators and the Rovaniemi bases with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, hotel pick-up included on most tours. Bring the driving licence on the day, not a photo of it. Morning departures have the most light in December, afternoon ones in February and March; the aurora safaris leave after dark and are the ones to book for the last night of the trip, so a cloudy forecast can be moved.
